Intro to the B&W Darkroom

Mondays, February 6, 13, 20, & 27: 10:00am–1:00pm or
Saturdays, March 3, 17, 24, & 31: 10:00am–1:00pm

Many of us spend a good portion of our day staring at a computer monitor, whether it be for work or for fun. The darkroom can be a peaceful, relaxing, magical retreat from that. OK, perhaps it isn't actually magical, but watching your first black-and-white image appear before your eyes can seem that way.

This introductory class will cover all the basics:

• Darkroom safety and equipment operation.
• Films, papers, and chemistry.
• Photograms.
• Film processing and contact sheets.
• Printing with contrast filters.
• Localized exposure control with burning and dodging.
• Demonstration of print toning.
• Discussion and demonstration of printing digital images in the darkroom.

This class is highly recommended for those people without prior darkroom experience who would like to rent our darkrooms during open sessions and for those who just want a taste of the darkroom without enrolling in an expensive semester-long course. Participants should have the use of a film camera.

Materials fee includes one package of 8x10 paper (25 sheets) and two rolls of film. More film and paper is available for purchase. Class fee includes one month of unlimited darkroom use at course conclusion for only $10 per session, an overall savings of $39.

Non-members: $175+$30 materials   Members: $150+$30 materials
