Matting & Framing The main reasons for custom framing are simple—selection and quality. Though they are less expensive, ready-made store-bought frames are often poorly assembled from inferior materials in a handful of common sizes only. Every element of a custom frame—mouldings, mat, backing material, mounting method, and size—are individually selected and combined to complement the art in its environment, or, in a gallery setting, to isolate it from its surroundings. Whether you intend on tackling your own framing or would just like a better understanding and appreciation of what is involved, this three-day workshop is for you. You will learn the vocabulary of framing, and what is involved in each step of the process:
• Types of matboard and how to cut single and double-rectangle window mats. You will have the opportunity to work with both home-quality and frame shop tools. You are asked to bring a selection of photographs, drawings, paintings, or other art or document you would like to frame. Initial materials include a sheet each of 32x40 mat board and acid-free foam backer and a roll of framer's tape. Participants have the option of purchasing additional board and frame mouldings to be used on Day 2 of the class.
