Beauty in Brown: The Vandyke

Saturday, October 23: 10:00am–4:00pm
(Originally Nov.6. Please note change).

The Vandyke print, though often confused with other similar photographic processes, is generally defined as a print whose light-sensitive emulsion is comprised of iron salts and silver and which prints out during exposure to UV light, thus not requiring a developer. It is simply cleared in a bath of water and fixed. The typical Vandyke is a print of cool brown tones.

Participants will be given an overview of making digital negatives for the Vandyke process. The majority of the day will be spent learning safe materials handling, applying emulsion to the paper, and exposing and processing the Vandyke print.

Participants will be given instructions on how to digitally prepare their image files and deliver them to us prior to the class. We will then make your negatives in advance which will allow for more printing time on the day of the workshop.

There will be a break for lunch. You are welcome to bring your own or order from any of a number of local restaurants. Please wear comfortable shoes.
