From Still to Motion: Video for Photographers

Saturdays: October 30, November 6, 13, 20,
and December 4, 11:
9:00am–12:00pm

Many of today's digital SLR cameras have high-definition video capabilities. This has opened up a new world of possibilities for photographers and aspiring film-makers. Even Hollywood is increasingly using these cameras for video capture due to their size, video quality, and flexibility.

This class will cover a lot of information in six three-hour sessions. Still photographers will learn how to transition to video.

Topics will include:

• The Language of Video (shot types/angles, movement types, timing).
• Composition Rules.
• Sequencing.
• Storyboarding.
• Preproduction planning.
• Technical essentials (frame size/rate, line scanning aspect ratio, compression).
• Lighting (analyzing, preparing, and controlling available and artificial lighting).
• Camera and lens considerations.
• Camera supports.
• Audio (microphone selection, channel configuration, noise reduction, recording).
• Media management (field storage, backup, asset control).
• Non-linear editing (platforms, editing basics, corrections).
• Output and distribution.

Participants should have access to an HDSLR and a laptop computer. Students should have a good basic understanding of still photographic technique, internet browsers, and computer use. Class time will be dedicated largely to lecture and video editing. There will be outside assignments.
